São Pedro da Afurada Festival 2026
Right across the water from our marina, Afurada throws its biggest party of the year. From 23 June to 6 July 2026, one of Greater Porto's most authentic fishing communities celebrates Saint Peter — patron saint of fishermen — with marching bands, fado, folk dancing, a procession and fireworks over the Douro. Here's what's happening, plus the full programme.
What it is (and why it's so close to home)
Afurada, in Vila Nova de Gaia, is a fishing village clinging to the river: the varinas (fishwives), the boats, the open-air riverside washing tanks, the smell of fish on the grill. The Festas de São Pedro are the fullest expression of that identity — faith, community and tradition, always with the water close by. For us at Port Sailors, this is quite literally our neighbourhood's festival: we sail from Douro Marina, just metres from the celebrations.

Local tips
- Come hungry. Afurada is famous for grilled fish — charcoal-grilled sardines and sea bass by the river are part of the ritual.
- Use public transport. On the big nights (4 & 5 July) parking is tough; the Afurada ferry, the bus, or walking along the riverside are your best bets.
- For the fireworks (4 Jul, midnight), arrive early and pick a spot with a river view — they reflect beautifully on the Douro.
- Bring a light layer: even in summer, it cools by the water at night.
See Afurada from the water
There are few better ways to feel this part of Porto than from the river — which is, after all, the heart of Afurada. Our sailings leave from Douro Marina, right next door, and glide past this fishing waterfront on the way to the Dom Luís I Bridge and the Atlantic. During the festival, the sunset over Afurada feels even more special. See our guide to the best time to sail in Porto and a Porto sunset under sail.
