"To sail is necessary; to live is not."— Fernando Pessoa
Some coastlines are not merely seen — they are sailed. The moment the Azimuth sailboat leaves the mouth of the Douro and meets the open Atlantic, the horizon opens up and the journey truly begins. This is sailing as it should be: wind in the sails, the coast of northern Portugal unfolding beside you, and the freedom to go as far as you wish.
Sail privately aboard the Azimuth sailboat along the Atlantic coast — from a relaxed half-day to Leixões and the beaches of Matosinhos, to full-day passages up to Póvoa de Varzim, and multi-day adventures south to Aveiro or north to elegant Viana do Castelo and across the border to Baiona and the Cíes Islands in Spain. Each route reveals a different stretch of the northern Portuguese coast, its harbours and its light.
Every route is a private sailboat adventure that adapts to your pace, your group and the wind. Choose a short escape onto the ocean, or a genuine multi-day passage living aboard the sailboat — with overnight stays in harbours like Aveiro, Viana do Castelo or Baiona, and the chance to take the helm and learn to sail alongside our skipper. On the longer routes the return leg is optional, so you can sail one-way and travel back at your leisure — because the coast is not crossed in haste, it is sailed with all the senses awakened.
Five sailings along the Atlantic coast aboard the Azimuth — from a half-day escape to a three-day offshore adventure into Spain.
A half-day escape to the open Atlantic: leave the Douro at Foz, feel the ocean swell and sail up to the harbour of Leixões and the beaches of Matosinhos before turning back to Porto. Drinks on board included. Up to 10 guests.
On calm-sea days we can drop anchor along the coast for a swim and a dive into the Atlantic before turning back to Porto — bring your swimwear.

A full day up the northern coast — past Leixões and the historic shipyards of Vila do Conde to the lively seaside town of Póvoa de Varzim, then back to Porto under sail. Drinks and a finger-food meal on board included. Up to 8 guests.
Póvoa de Varzim is a lively Atlantic resort town with deep fishing roots. In the centre you’ll find one of Portugal’s oldest casinos (Casino da Póvoa), the atmospheric old fishermen’s quarter around Praça do Almada, the little seaside Fortim de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and a long golden beachfront. Neighbouring Vila do Conde adds a striking medieval aqueduct and a riverside convent.
Ashore & free time: During the stop there is time to stroll the marina and seafront, browse the fish market and enjoy fresh seafood at a harbourside restaurant before we sail back to Porto.
Sleep on land instead? Póvoa is a same-day round trip, but if you’d like to extend it into an overnight with a hotel stay in town, just ask and we’ll tailor it for you (hotel not included in the sailing price).

A one- or two-day passage south to the "Portuguese Venice". Around 8 hours of sailing down the coast past Espinho into the Ria de Aveiro; you sleep on board moored in Aveiro. On the two-day version the second day is the return leg to Porto. Drinks, meals and overnight aboard included. 1–6 guests (ideal 4–6).
Aveiro is known as the “Portuguese Venice” for the canals that thread its centre, crossed by colourful moliceiro boats. Highlights include the elegant Art Nouveau townhouses (and the Museu Arte Nova), the Aveiro Cathedral and the Santa Joana Museum, the fish-market district, and the famous local sweet, ovos moles. Across the lagoon, Costa Nova is lined with candy-striped fishermen’s houses.
Ashore & free time: Take a moliceiro canal cruise, sample ovos moles, wander the Art Nouveau streets, or hop over to Costa Nova for the striped houses and the beach.
Sleep on land instead? Instead of sleeping on board you can choose to overnight in a hotel in the centre of Aveiro — just let us know and we’ll arrange it (hotel not included in the sailing price).

A one- or two-day sail up the northern coast — around 8 hours past Vila do Conde, Póvoa and Esposende to elegant Viana do Castelo, gateway to the Minho; you sleep on board moored in Viana. On the two-day version the second day is the return leg to Porto. Drinks, meals and overnight aboard included. 1–6 guests (ideal 4–6).
Viana do Castelo is one of the most elegant towns of northern Portugal, set where the Lima river meets the ocean. Its crown is the hilltop Santa Luzia Basilica, reached by a historic funicular, with sweeping views over the coast. The historic centre gathers around the Renaissance Praça da República with its ornate fountain and old town hall; don’t miss the Gil Eannes hospital-ship museum on the quay and the local tradition of gold filigree.
Ashore & free time: Ride the funicular up to Santa Luzia, explore the old town’s squares and craft shops, relax on Praia do Cabedelo across the river, and dine on fresh seafood.
Sleep on land instead? Rather than sleeping aboard, you can choose a hotel in Viana — for example the Pousada up on Santa Luzia hill — just let us know and we’ll arrange it (hotel not included).

Our flagship offshore adventure into Spain. Day 1: a ~15-hour passage from Porto across to Baiona in the Rías Baixas. Day 2: sail the ría with the option to visit the stunning Cíes Islands. Day 3: the return passage Baiona → Porto. Drinks, meals and overnight aboard included, plus dinner at a local restaurant in Baiona. 1–6 guests (ideal 4–6).
Baiona sits across the border in Spain’s Rías Baixas and was the first port in Europe to hear of the discovery of America, in 1493 — celebrated today by a full-size replica of the caravel La Pinta moored in its harbour. The town is guarded by the Monterreal fortress, whose sea walls you can walk (it now houses a Parador), while the Casco Vello (old town) is a maze of granite lanes, tapas bars and Galician seafood — albariño wine, octopus and percebes. Above the bay rises the Virgen de la Roca statue.
Ashore & free time: Walk the fortress walls, visit the La Pinta caravel and graze the old-town tapas bars. Weather permitting, we sail out to the Cíes Islands and their pristine Rodas beach, within the Atlantic Islands National Park.
Sleep on land instead? Instead of sleeping on board you can choose a hotel in Baiona — such as the Parador inside the Monterreal fortress — just let us know and we’ll arrange it (hotel not included).
